Quiet Day, Harbor Town, & Emmeloord
Friday, May 29
Friday was a laaazy day. The only thing I did was take a short walk up the road from Joyce's apartment to the shops. I bought a few small things, but quickly came home because the weather was looking menacing. It was gloomy and rainy for the entire afternoon and evening. I wish I could've watched Harry Potter! We did watch the second episode of a series called Penny Dreadful that I'm enjoying. It's on Showtime, but I can get it on Netflix, so I will have to look into that when I get home. It's kind of a Halloweeny type show, so maybe I'll wait to watch it more in a few months.
In very exciting news from Friday, my friend Julie had her baby! Welcome to the world, Emerson! I can't wait to meet her when I get home.
Saturday, May 30
Sunshine yesterday, which I really needed! Joyce and I drove about 45 minutes to the town of Urk, which is a fishing village on a harbor. The idea was to eat some herring! We walked around just a bit for me to take a few photos, and then we quickly found a restaurant to order some fish because it was so windy and cold outside. We got raw herring and some deep fried white fish.
The flavor of the herring was actually good, but what I couldn't do was the texture. It was almost gelatin-like. I'm glad I tried it! The fried fish was fresh and delicious!
We drove around Urk for a little while so that I could see the town. It was a cute! Small streets, quaint houses. Apparently the town is riddled with controversy, though. Religious people who drink too much and do drugs, who may or may not commit incest, etc. They do not have a good reputation!
After that we continued on to Emmeloord, which is nearby to Urk, for a birthday party! We stayed there for quite a while. Joyce's younger sister just kept on bringing food out... it never ended!
Later on last night we met up with Joyce's friend at a bar called "The Bottom" and hung out for a few hours. Overall, fun day!
