Learning the Route to the DRC & A Welcome Party

Today I slept in until about 10:00. I haven't had any concept of time since I've been here because my phone has been dead and I have no alarm clock in my room. (Luckily I did find one and will have one for tomorrow!) I decided to immediately get ready for the day. Showering was even more challenging than yesterday because I washed my hair. Pretty sure half of the water went outside of the tub. O'well!

After eating some granola with milk (called something else, but I can't remember now what they referred to it as) and chatting with Ian about American accents (he thinks that southerners have the most poetic ones!), I went for a walk. I made my way to where my work will be (Disability Resource Centre or DRC). I got lost a few times, but it's actually fairly easy. I just need to pay closer attention to landmarks. All of the houses and streets look so similar, so I think that's why it's difficult right now. It's about a half hour walk to work and I'm sure it'll get shorter as I learn the way better. I pass Parker's Piece, which is one of the huge green spaces around campus, and the most gorgeous church, which I need to find out the name of and take a picture of.

Shortly after I got back home, people started arriving for the pizza party that Carrie and Ian threw in my honor. It was the three of us, Gabby, Jim, and Ottilie (neighbors), Becky (Carrie and Ian's daughter), Susie and Mark (Becky's friends), and Joanna (fellow colleague at the DRC). It was really nice. I felt myself kind of being lost in their conversations due to differences in lingo. I'm also an introvert and generally shy around people I don't know, so I felt badly about being quiet but I'm more of a one-on-one type of person anyway. It was nice to meet some people my age (Becky and her friends are 29 and 30) and hopefully if I'm feeling lonely, I can hang out with them sometimes. They mentioned a few times that we could get together, so that's sweet of them.

So tomorrow is my first day of work. Carrie and I are going together so that I can see the route she takes. I'm nervous to start, mostly I think because I'm unsure of expectations and I honestly feel a little unprepared. I need to do some reading tonight and work on goals for the practicum, which are due on Thursday and John has to sign off on them, so we need to discuss them first. I wanted to go in tomorrow having them done, but we'll see if that works. Everyone is so nice and the place is amazing--I just really hope I enjoy the work I'll be doing!
