First Day at Work

I followed Carrie in on our bikes so that I could see the route she takes, which is faster than the one I took yesterday when I walked. There are so many streets that all look very similar and no one way is a straight shot, so I get confused easily. The other thing is that the street signs are on the buildings and not on every corner, so if you happen to turn onto the street where there isn't a sign, you may not know what street you're on for a few blocks or more. For these reasons, I think it'll take me awhile to really know where I'm going.

It was bloody cold this morning riding in. (Can you tell I just wanted to say "bloody"?) I'm fairly certain my hands felt like ice when I shook John's hand. John is my supervisor and he is a delight. The whole office reminds me of the one at Advocate BroMenn--it's old and you can tell it's been done up to look fairly new, but doesn't quite convince you. The DRC is in a building that was part of the old Addenbrooke's hospital--maybe that's why it feels like home! (Home being BroMenn. But no longer. Sad face.) The majority of the day was orientation to the DRC and its services, chatting with John about my project, and meeting people in the office. I did have a chance to get myself settled in my office space and read up a little bit on what I'll be researching. I really have a lot to learn and it frightens me how little I know. I hope I don't get lost in the lingo, jargon, terminology, etc. My other concern is not being familiar with the structure of UK universities and UK legislation around disability. Hopefully I'll pick it up quick. The good thing is that John is very open to questions and is so supportive. I just hope I can do him proud on this project because it seems very important to him. High expectations to live up to! Eek!

Everyone else is very nice in the DRC, of course. A very sweet girl, Joanna (who was at my pizza party last night), took me next door to the Judge Business School, which has a small cafeteria type area for lunch and left me to it. At 4:00 pm, we all were done for the day and went to Brown's, which is a very swank bar just on the other side of the Judge. A "welcome drink" for me was a coconut daiquiri (delicious!), bought by Joanna. We stayed for a little while and then parted ways.

Carrie and I rode home the way that I walked to the DRC yesterday. I feel more acclimated to that route, but it sounds like it'll be impossible to cycle because it's really busy. Maybe I'll walk, but riding the bike is so much faster, so I hope I can find my way on a less crowded route.
